These are all good reasons for owning firearms. In order to safely use and enjoy your guns, every gun owner should enroll in a course that provides the knowledge and skills to safely operate a firearm.
Target-Pro Firearms Training Academy provides professional and quality training in Basic Pistol instruction. In the Basic Pistol Course, you will learn the safe and proper handling and discharge of firearms. You will develop knowledge and skills that will enable you to be a responsible gun owner, and be certified by the State of Tennessee to make application for your Handgun Carry Permit. When comparing training provided by other schools or private instructors, be sure you receive NRA Course material and range time as offered by Target-Pro Firearms Training Academy. Our instruction is much more comprehensive than the minimum required training by the state for the handgun carry permit.

At Target-Pro Firearms Training Academy our objective is instruct you in the safe and proper use of a firearm, apprize you of the current Tennessee State laws regulating the carry of handguns and to enable you to qualify and pass the Tennessee State requirements allowing you to make application for your TN carry permit. This is done in a very systematic way, building upon basic training and learning fundamentals provided by our course.
In order to obtain a Tennessee State Handgun Permit, you must be 21 years of age and complete a Tennessee State certified handgun safety course. Successful completion of the Basic Pistol Shooting Course meets the Tennessee handgun safety course requirement. If the applicant is not prohibited from purchasing or possessing a firearm in this state pursuant to Tennessee State statutes or any other state or federal law and the applicant otherwise meets all of the requirements, the State of Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit department shall issue a permit to the applicant.
The NRA Basic Pistol and the TN State Handgun Carry Permit Courses are combined. You will learn much more than the minimum of the state requirements for the Handgun Carry Permit. This class is by far the most popular and usually fills up quickly. See the calendar page for course dates.
Upon completion of the Basic Pistol / TN Handgun Carry Permit Class, you will receive certification from NRA and from Target-Pro Firearms Training Academy suitable for framing.

I really enjoy teaching! It is something that I have been doing for many years. I am concerned about my students learning properly in whatever class discipline I may be instructing. But, especially in handgun training, your safety is paramount. I want you to be a well-informed, responsible, safe gun owner. There are many mega classes that you may attend. These classes may be good for most, but I prefer smaller classes where we incorporate hands-on learning with different types of pistols in the class room. Most of us are much more comfortable with hands-on training and seem to learn quicker whenever this method is used.
Above all, if you have questions about the school or class, or the method use to instruct, you should talk with the instructor. You can often get a feel for the type of instructor he or she is. Not every instructor may be a good fit for you. If the instructor is too busy to talk with you, I recommend that you find another school.

Instruction can be arranged for those individuals who may desire one-on-one personal training. Target-Pro FTA offers instruction for families or friends who have 2 – 5 members in their party. These small groups offer camaraderie, fellowship and provide a certain amount of familiarity among folk who already know each other. This is often less intimidating than participating in a class where the majority of people are unfamiliar to you. At any rate, whether you participate as an individual, small group or regular size class, Target-Pro FTA will do everything possible to make you welcome in a friendly environment, providing the highest quality training. After all, your satisfaction is what keeps us in business!

Instruction will be presented in bite-sized modules that are easily remembered. Your instructor will provide clear, concise instruction, using the latest in technology. Lectures, power-point presentation and hands-on-learning are combined into a course that is educational, fun and qualifies you to make application for the TN Carry Permit License.
Pistols – both revolvers and semi-autos (auto loaders) are discussed fully. You will have supervised opportunity to handle both types, loading them with dummy rounds and then dry-firing. You will have acquired the knowledge to safely, confidently handle and properly use either a revolver or semi-auto.
Questions are encouraged and no student is made to feel uncomfortable or put on the spot. We are here to instruct and answer all of your questions. Students are encouraged to ask questions. There are no unimportant or silly questions – especially when it comes to the safe, responsible and proper use of firearms!
Before we go to the Firing Range, you will be instructed in the proper use of Range Commands.
Depending on the course selection, for those who would like to test fire a variety of guns, you will be given opportunity to fire a pellet gun, .22, 9mm, .40, .38 SP, .357 Mag, .44 SP and .44 Mag. This transition provides those who may lack experience shooting any type of gun, the opportunity to start with smaller calibers and work up to a larger caliber. This is great training for those taking the Advance Basic Pistol Course.
On the shooting range, students will benefit from the instruction of an experienced NRA Certified Shooting Coach. For students who may have difficulty consistently hitting the target where they are aiming, the Shooting Coach can quickly identify problems and offer solutions to correct those problems. You must qualify on the range meeting the minimum skills requirements - they are not that difficult. But, more importantly, Target-Pro Firearms Training Academy wants you to exceed those minimum requirements of the state.
Shooting low and to the left? Under the watchful eye of your instructor, you will be provided solutions that will correct bad habits or inconsistent, or poor techniques. Our desire is to help you be the best and safest shooter possible.
It is the student’s responsibility to provide their own lunch. If you plan to eat lunch – you must bring your own. Bottled water will be provided throughout the course, or you may bring your favorite beverage. NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES PERMITTED.
Requirements for Basic Pistol
Pistol – revolver or semi-auto pistol of your choice. You don't have to shoot with the gun you plan to carry, so you may qualify using a .22 pistol if you prefer. If you do not have a gun at the time of class, with prior notification, one may be rented for a nominal charge. A minimum of 75 rounds of ammo are required by each student. (If a pistol is rented from Target-Pro Firearms Training Academy, it will be your responsibility to pay for the ammo. (Ammunition must be purchased from us.) You must inform me one week prior to the course so that I can have the proper pistol and ammo for you.) Hearing and eye protection must be worn when on the range. These are provided if you do not have your own.
TN Carry Permit License
The applicant must be 21 years of age and pass a 30 question test. For the skills test, applicants must qualify with a gun of their choice on the range. Instruction and training provided by Target-Pro FTA will provide more than sufficient knowledge and skills to pass the test. Note: You do not have to carry the gun you qualify with.
Upon successful completion of the Basic Pistol course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for the Handgun Safety Course from Target-Pro Firearms Training Academy. This is issued by the instructor on behalf of the TN Department of Safety. Upon presentation of the certificate at any TN state driver’s license office, you will be given an application form to complete. The TN state Carry Permit application fee is $115.00. Cash or Money Orders only. Personal checks or Credit Cards are not accepted.
The fingerprinting is included in the application fee paid to the Tennessee Department of Safety. When registering for fingerprinting you are designated as AGENCY PAY. No additional fees are required.
You will then be given a nine digit code so you can register online with COGENT for fingerprinting. COGENT'S registration site is: www.tennessee.cogentid.com. After you register online, you may go to any COGENT agent location to complete the process. This completes the application process. You should receive your TN Carry Permit within ninety days.
You have heard, "You get what you pay for." And, that is true in this industry. Cost per Basic Pistol/TN Carry Permit instruction is $85.00. (See Pistol Course Page) You receive quality training from an experienced shooter and professional NRA Certified Instructor along with all pertinent course materials. Hands-on training aids are used in the class room, giving you opportunity to become familiar with different types of firearms and how they work.
New Class Format

For those who have a difficult time giving up a full day to obtaining a handgun carry permit, we offer a new format that divides the class room and range session, making it even more convenient for you to take the course. With husband and wife working 5 - 6 days each week, it is often impossible to give up a full day for any extra activity. The demand for these split classes is being met by Target-Pro Firearms Training Academy.
Dates for the split classes are reflected on the Course Dates web page. Scroll until you find a window that says Split Dates. Here, you will find the dates that the class is being offered. These classes are offered as our schedule permits and the class size is limited.
On split class dates, the four hour class room session is offered from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. The following Saturday morning, the class reconvenes at the range at 8:00 a.m. for the qualifying part of the course.
